· When the car is moving, the air flow thru the radiator is all you need and the fan can remain off. If you locate it in the manifold, it will sense the water temperature the thermostat is trying to maintain, typically around 180 to 195 degrees F. In this location, a low temperature switch will keep the fan running most of the time or a high temperature switch will not start the fan until the engine is starting to overheat. If you do …

· A gauge won't run off a temperature switch. Also that temp switch supplies the switchable ground connection to the fan relay. Since you have the gauge and the fan wired in parallel, the relay may be picking up a sneak path to ground through the autometer gauge and which is then turning the relay on, effectively bypassing the temp swich altogether.

Electric Fan Temp. Sensors | Hot Rod Forum

· Alan, I would move your temp gauge sensor to the location where you're fan sensor is now. This should give you a more accurate reading. If your radiator doesn't have a bung for a fan thermostat, I would spend the $30 it will take for an adjustable fan thermostat that will replace your radiator petc0ck. This adjustable switch will allow your fan to come on and go off at whatever coolant temperatures you desire and it's the way most street rods run electric fans.

· The fan sensor is reading the coolant temp coming out of the radiator while the temp gauge is reading the coolant temp going into the radiator or leaving the engine. The point is you need to be aware of the big picture when you install your fan sensor. If you can install it in the head or intake manifold it would probably be best. I am used to how mine operates and don't give it much thought.

Cut the rubber hose that connects the manifold water feed to the heater and splice in a tee adapter for the temp gauge sender. Be sure to use the same water feed line as the ECT sensor. That way you will get the most accurate temp readings. …
